Garnishing is by many almost considered to be as important to the overall cocktail as the ingredients that go in it. I may not go that far, but agree that the right garnish can do wonders for a drink, not just aesthetically as a decoration, but also with regards to taste.

The point of the garnish is to complement and enhance the drink, not to overwhelm it! Besides being able to slightly enhance the natural ingredients of the cocktail, the right garnish can also quite successfully boost the flavours of the drink. Most classic cocktail recipes require a traditional garnish. Taking the cherry out of the Manhattan or serving a Martini with anything but an olive or a twist is almost unthinkable and would possibly even disqualify the cocktail as a true Manhattan or Martini.
